Storm Claims Life in Scott County-Name Released

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is working with counties to assess damage from the severe weather beginning on April 9, 2024. There are reports of homes damaged, trees down, roads blocked, and power outages due to the storms. One death (Scott County) and one injury (Grenada County) have been reported to MEMA. Statewide, counties have reported 72 homes have been damaged.




Initial damage assessments are underway. The following is PRELIMINARY and will change through the assessment process. These counties report some damage to homes ranging from affected to destroyed.


· Grenada – 1 injury, 3 homes

· Hinds – 6 homes

· Marshall – 9 homes

· Scott– 1 death, 45 homes

· Warren – 3 homes

· Yazoo – 6 homes


MEMA encourages residents who’ve sustained damage after a severe weather event to do the following:

· File an insurance claim.

· Take photos of the damage to the home. · Report damage to county/MEMA via the self-report tool.


The death occurred on Futch Road north of Forest, just off Hwy 35 . The deceased has been identified as Shirley Wilson, who died when her power went out and her oxygen machine was not able to operate.
